CASA's home field is the Gude Drive Flying Field and is available for flying electric and sailplanes at all times. The Gude Drive flying site is located near 600 East Gude Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. It is on a closed Montgomery County landfill and was formerly used by the DCRC club. There are portions of the old paved runway left and a gazebo for shade. There is a CASA winch on site and a growing group of thermal fliers. Please follow the posted field rules. There is a lock at the site and members receive the combination.  Please lock the gate when you are last to leave and no waste disposal workers are on site.  Contact our Flying Site Coordinator or Safety Officer with any questions you may have or click "read more..." for restrictions. Click on the "Read more..." link for restrictions and additional CASA requirements.

Directions:

From I-270, take Route 28 West exit (Montgomery Ave.). Turn right onto Research Blvd. Turn right onto West Gude Drive. Turn left directly across from Fischer Lumber. The address is 600 East Gude Drive. Follow gravel road to the top of the hill.

The Gude Drive Airfield and the surrounding area was once owned by the Adolph Gude family. Gude ran a large nursery near the site until the middle seventies complete with rail service and a full size airstrip. The Gude house still sits on Crabs Branch Way as a Maryland Historical Trust site.

Montgomery County acquired the site for a landfill that was active until the early eighties. Pipes collect methane gas from the landfill. The gas then powers generators producing electricity that's sold to PEPCO. In 2006 an outdoor furnace was erected to burn off the methane as it was not profitable to maintain the electric generators.

What is it?

CASA Member Charles French calls it a preserve while actually it's part of an abandoned landfill.  What follows is his description.  It covers an area about one half of a mile by three quarters of a mile.  The site is also bordered by Rock Creek Park on two sides and a watershed park on another.  On one corner of the site we fly Radio Controlled Sailplanes and Electric Planes.  If you want some more information on the history of the site check out Gude History
. If you would like to see some photos of Gude check the galleries and the rest of this article

Wildlife Abundance

Despite being in the suburb of a major metropolitan city there exist a sizable and varied wildlife population.  I think what contributes to this is Rock Creek Park, one of the biggest urban Parks in the country and the open grasslands of the site.

Land Animals

I counted four different foxes on a winter day last year.  We have seen herds of deer numbering around a dozen. Also observed are Ground Hogs, Voles, Mice, and Rabbits.

Birds

For the last couple of winters two Red Tail hawks have made this area their home.  Other Raptors I have seen include the Broad Winged Hawk, Turkey and Black Vulture, Goshawk, Northern Harrier and the hovering Kestrals who feed on the abundant voles in the area.  Making stops at Gude have been Osprey and the Great Blue Heron.  Other birds we have seen include; Blue Birds, King Birds, Mocking Birds, Swallows, Chimney Swifts, Baltimore Orioles, Red Winged Blackbirds, Indigo Bunting, Kill deer, and Night Hawks.
